Seed Success and Weekly News!

Our seed experiment has been a success, and a lot of fun too! Students could hardly wait to check on their beans each day! We have observed them grow and swell, open, and now show off a green stem! It has been a great kickoff to our plant unit. Check out the photos!

This week we continue to build our reading community and work on our personal narrative stories in writing. We will be choosing one later this week to take through the writing process and become our first published piece! In math we are wrapping up chapter 1 and reviewing 2-digit addition and subtraction. Our test will be this Friday, August 30! If you'd like to review any of the Ch. 1 lessons with your child at home using our online textbook, you can find it here. The end of the first five day week!

Our first full week of school is coming to a close, and we are finally starting to feel the routine! We are continuing to grow our reading community and build our stamina during read-to-self. In writing, we have started generating ideas for personal narratives. We will begin to focus them, or zoom them in so that we don't tell a whole watermelon story, but rather focus on a tiny seed story!

In math, we are working through our first chapter which is lots of review. We're learning about fact families, inverse operations, missing addends, the order, identity, and grouping properties of addition, and now two-digit addition and subtraction. We'll be ready for our first test next week!

We've also started our first science unit on the topic of plants! Students are so excited about their first experiment. We have "planted" seeds and cannot wait to see what happens to them! Stay tuned!

Have a great weekend!

First Day!

Check out the new 3rd graders of Room 19!

We had a great first day! We toured the building, got to know one another, and did some fun activities! You can read the poem "What's in the Sack?" by Shel Silverstein here! It's going to be a wonderful school year!
