Upcoming Tests!

Don't forget our first spelling tests will begin this week, and our Chapter 2-3 math test is this Tuesday! The major concepts include reading and writing numbers up to the hundred thousands, understanding numbers in standard form (257), word form (two-hundred fifty seven) and expanded form (200+50+7), and rounding! Students should be able to round numbers to the nearest ten, hundred, and thousand. For example: 6,526 to the nearest ten = 6,530, nearest hundred = 6,500, and nearest thousand = 7,000.

Writing Celebration!

Today we celebrated our first personal narrative stories! We really enjoyed setting up our classroom like a museum, reading one anothers pieces, and writing compliments!

Now we're ready to put in some more hard work during writing! We look forward to our next celebration!

Science Test Tuesday!

We are ready for our first science test which will cover our plants unit! Your child should know the things plants need, the parts of the plant including the function of each part, and understand the lifecycle of plants. Students have various handouts and informational worksheets in their binders that they may review, but again, they are ready!

After completing this science unit, we will begin social studies!

Writing Spotlight!

Today we learned about paragraphing, and students put a box around chunks of sentences that go together in preparation!

Alivia's story lead jumps into the action and includes a sound effect! She has prepared for paragraphing!

Elise also begins with a sound effect!

Zoe really sets the scene with her lead!

Julian begins with a sound effect lead!

Gabby works hard on her paragraphing. She has included many details from her memory!

 Way to go writers!

Kid Blog

Students have begun using Kid Blog in our classroom! We are using this digital tool to blog about books we are reading and recommend books to one another. Ask your child to show you our class reading blog at home! Your student can blog about books outside of the classroom, too! Click the image below or access via the "Reading Workshop" tab at the top of our blog.

A great book recommendation includes:
  • The title and author of the book
  • What the book is about...but don't give away too much information!
  • The strengths of the book. What did the author do well?
  • Your personal response - why did you like the story?
Happy reading! Happy blogging!

This Week...

This week we'll begin Chapter 2 in mathematics (Place Value and Number Sense)! We will also work through Chapter 3 before our next test. You can find some great math games here or under "Math Workshop" and/or on our class website. Please sign your child's Chapter 1 test and return it to school. Thank you!

In science we continue our plant unit, and in writing we are getting closer to publishing and finishing our first third grade pieces! We can't wait to celebrate all of our efforts and share our stories with you! Stay tuned!
