Writing...1st Day to Last Day

Today we revisited a writing activity that we did on the very first day of school! I read the story Today I feel Silly and Other Moods that Make My Day by Jamie Lee Curtis. On the first day of school, we discussed and wrote about how we were feeling about the start of third grade. Nervous was most popular. Today was different. The two stand out moods were sad and excited! Students really enjoyed seeing their piece from the first day when they had finished and looking at how much they've grown this year as a writer! I hope your child shares his/her pieces with you!

Literacy Festival!

On Friday, our school had a literacy festival! We took part in various activities and stations throughout the day! We also got to meet some published authors, and we could hardly contain our excitement! Check out our day in photos!

Starting with warm ups and kickball!
So excited to meet Michael Rex, author of Fangbone!

We learned about how Michael Rex creates his stories!
He's also an illustrator and drew a picture for us!
Meeting another author and former teacher, Mrs. Debbie Nelson Linck.
We received a summer reading list and got to take two books home!

Finally, we made thank you cards for our special guests!

We loved the literacy festival!

Junior Achievement

Last week we were privileged to have Junior Achievement in our classroom! Students learned about city planning, running a business, writing for a newspaper, managing money and writing checks, and more!

We owe a huge thank you to Mr. Shelton for facilitating this program! This coming week we will continue to discuss some of these economic concepts in social studies. We'll look more closely at concepts like saving and spending, income, budget, etc.

Gooseberry Park

We just finished one of my FAVORITE stories by one of my FAVORITE authors...Gooseberry Park by Cynthia Rylant! I was first introduced to this story in college when one of my professors shared it with me in hopes that we might take it away and one day share it with our students. I am so glad that I have, for they too loved this story!

After begging me to read "just one more chapter" each day, they came up with the idea to write to Cynthia Rylant! They 're eager to tell her about how much they loved her story and also request a sequel or a movie! Therefore, we worked on our letters this week, and we are finally ready to send them off! Check out a few of our letters!

You can visit Cynthia Rylant's website here to check out some of her other wonderful books. We'll keep our fingers crossed that with less than a month of school to go, we might hear back from this beloved author!
