Suitcase Projects

Students packed a "suitcase" for social studies and acted as a settler moving west! Prior, they discussed their ancestry and heirlooms or special items that belong to members of their family with loved ones! Thanks for your help! The information helped them "pack!" Here's a few of our suitcases!

Box Top Collection Winners!

Our class collected the most box tops! Thank you families for collecting and sending them to school! We enjoyed a special treat - popcorn!!!

Our Learning Lately!

Hopefully today was our last snow day! Here's a look at our learning lately! We had several students participate in PRISM! They really enjoyed sharing their projects with us!

We also started a social studies unit on St. Louis and how our city began! We did a readers theater to learn about a family headed west. They decided to settle in St. Louis instead!
This week is National Read Across America Week and Long school is full of decorated classroom doors - favorite Dr. Seuss stories and other wonderful books! We picked Horton Hears a Who! We can't wait to take a walk around the school in celebration!
Have a great week!

Happy New Year!

Welcome back! It seemed that students were happy to return to school today especially after four snow days making for an extended winter break! We started our day sharing our winter break fun with others!
Then we reviewed the importance of reading to self each day! Students did a fantastic job and showed no loss of stamina! Yippee! In writing, we got back to our informational pieces and met with our writing partners for a final edit. Publishing starts Monday!

In math, we did some review of time and patterns and jumped into probability!

Key vocabulary: certain, likely, unlikely, impossible
What is the probability of spinning an odd number? -certain
What is the probability of spinning a number greater than 20? -likely
What is the probability of spinning number 51? -unlikely
What is the probability of spinning a 3-digit number? -impossible
You can practice with your student by making your own spinner at home and/or using colored paper squares in a bag, etc. Have fun!
We finished our day with a fun New Year resolution activity! Ask your student about his/hers!

Finally, we can't wait to start science on Monday! 2014 is here, and we are excited about the second semester!
